March 30,2012 There are a number of important reasons why Casale Jewelers decided to Go Green with there business. The most significant being that preserving the world’s natural resources is the responsibility of every individual both at work and at home. Casale introduced eco-friendly LED lighting inside the showcases and on the tracks of the ceiling fixtures. | LED lights use about 1/10 the amount of energy used in traditional light bulbs. It is a fact that LED light bulbs last about 30 times longer than traditional light bulbs. With this, the store will help Save Money,Save Electric and Save the Planet. |
The next step was to add two Mitsubishi MSZ-D36NA air conditioning units that have incredible efficiency. | The Mitsubishi Mini-Split systems make their mark on not only the temperature of a home, but the homeowner’s energy bills as well. The MSZ/MUZ-D36NA-1 system uses R410A refrigerant,a far more environmentally friendly and less polluting refrigerant. |
Going Green is an incremental process. As with many other business efforts, there will be easily attainable action steps and more advanced requirements. It is impossible to say how far along the Green path any business should travel, but a focused effort can have a meaningful impact. | “Going Green is a big step in Casale helping the environment. We are known for giving back to the community,it is now time to give back to the earth and help make the world a cleaner place”says Cory Schifter, owner of Casale Jewelers. |
“We have changed the lighting in our showcases and ceiling fixtures and added energy efficient air/heating units to start, the next steps include recyclable business cards and customer bags. We have our plan in place,it is time to implement.” The larger value of going green relates to maintaining the health of the environment. Utilizing sustainable methods can prevent the waste of natural resources, helping reduce the risk of depletion on the long run. Going green can be as simple as making sure lights are turned off in unused offices–thus preventing the waste of electricity–or as elaborate as utilizing alternative forms of energy (i.e.,solar or wind energy). In either case, the goal of making these changes is to preserve natural resources by using those that are sustainable,or by taking measures to reduce the amount consumed. We turn around in one day. It’s shipped same day, sometimes the next day,” says Schifter. “A lot of the variety that we do are children, babies, deceased loved ones, families, boyfriends, girlfriends.” While the lockets are made onsite, customers can take creative control from the comfort of their living room, not just choosing the picture, but designing all aspects of the locket from engraving to embellishing. Are you looking for a diamond engagement ring and don’t know where to start? What is all this talk about 4 or 5 c’s,certifications,RAP,appraisal price vs actual price and more? Well stay tuned cause I am going to give you a rundown of what to look for and what to ask. 4 C’s,or do we plead the 5th?The 4c’s of diamonds are Cut (Shape),Color (Color),Clarity (Inclusions),Carat (Weight) and the 5th is Cost ($$$). I will explain briefly so you will understand and I won’t torture you with boring details.
CUTWhat is the shape of the stone? Round is most common with Princess (aka Square) not too far behind. Cushion and Emerald have become popular because of the celebs. So that’s the easy one right? She can tell you the shape and you are good. Nope. It is important to see how a diamond is cut because if it is not cut proportionally, than the light will do into the stone and never come back out. The diamond will look dull and that’s not what you want. You can find the Cut,Symmetry and Polish on a certification. Make sure they are all “Good”or better.
COLORColor is easy to figure out,but sometimes tough to see. Colorless diamonds that are more valuable. The diamond color scale starts from D (colorless) and goes all the way to Z+ (fancy yellow). For white diamonds, try to stick from D (the best) to I (faint yellow) color. I color is not bad. The faint yellow is tough to see under normal light. Once you get into the Jm to K range,a light yellow may be noticeable. K and below aren’t too bad if you buy a yellow gold setting. You will see it more in a white gold or platinum setting.
CLARITYJust like every person is not perfect, neither are most diamonds. And there is no need to be. Imperfections in a diamond make it yours. They are like a person’s birthmarks. BUT… just like too many birthmarks can be bad,so can too many inclusion as they will prevent light from going through the stone. Light bounces in and doesn’t come out. And,even more of a problem is that the diamond can get worse like a windshield. The more impact can cause more cracks and may even dull the stone completely after time. You don’t want that. Stay with a stone that is SI3 or better. Some I1′s are ok but you have to look at the diamond with a loop to get the real picture of it.
CaratCarat is the weight of the stone. Size matters but not in this case. It’s all about the next C to find a happy medium. We have had customers come in and not know what size looks like what. “I want a 2ct.” After they leave happy with a beautiful 1.50ct,they are very happy. See this chart to see how they measure up against what you really think.
CostThe crucial C. Everyone thinks that have to spend 10′s of thousands of dollars on a ring. Well,I am going to tell you that’s not the case. Everyone has a budget. Each jeweler should be able to work with your budget to make you happy. Some jewelers will work with you and in the end,you walk out unhappy. Engagement rings are the start of a long term relationship for us,we want you to walk away happy and proud. And we want everyone else to see that rock and want to choose us. We make our customers look good cause when you look good,we look good. Now that we are done with that…how do you trust that you are getting what you are getting? You get a certification see!! You also ask the important question. How much is that on RAP? (Shhhhh –it’s an industry secret that most won’t tell you). This is how you get the appraisal value of a diamond. CertificationWhat is a certification? A certification assure that you are getting what you paid for. It is an analysis from an independent company that looks at the diamond at 60x magnification to make sure the 4c’s are documented correctly. A certficate and an appraisal are much different. An appraisal is done by the jeweler so don’t confuse the 2. The most popular certification is GIA but others like EGL USA and IGI are close to being as good. EGL Israel does not accurately document the 4 C’s and have been known to not be as accurate. Check out this certificate to see how it looks.
RAP and Appraisal PriceRAP (stands for RAPAPORT) is a diamond sheet that gives you the current value of the diamond. This price varies up to 20% depending on the rarity of the diamond. When diamond shopping, ask the value on RAP. See what the jeweler says. Also, ask to see the sheet to be sure. It looks like your simple spreadsheet. It has carat weight at the top, color is vertical and clarity is horizontal. The values will be right there in front of you. This is what we use in the industry to value diamonds. This sample is from 2006. So don’t use as a reference.
ConclusionNow you know the basics about buying a diamond. I tried to make it dummy proof and simple so I hope it worked. People have written books and there are courses that are years long so don’t worry knowing too much. Know what questions to ask,ask me if you have any questions (my email is cory@casalejewelry.com) or just come by. Knowing a jeweler you can trust is 3/4 of the battle;the other 1/4 is finding out what she wants and getting it right. Check out our website link to see what ring suits her. We tried to cover all styles with details on each. Good luck. Watch brands include Casio G-Shock,Citizen Eco-Drive,Pre-Owned Rolex,Breitling,Tag Heuer,Skagen,Wenger Swiss Army,Fossil and more. Jewelry brands include Swarovski Crystal and Jewelry,Picturesongold.com,Kameleon Jewel Pops,Zable Beads and Charm Bracelets,Hershey Kiss,Adami and Martucci Fine Jewelry,CHISEL,Posh Mommy and Benchmark Wedding Bands. **This is how I define each. I don’t look up definitions but I speak on experience. So your idea or a dictionary may have a different meaning that what I am writing.** What is Advertising? Advertising is a way trying to entice consumers to shop at your store or use your service via newspaper, magazines,TV commercials, mailings, web site, email blasts and more. This is a way of telling customers what you have in your store, what you offer or just a reminder that you are still around. Some will include a special discount or offer to really grab the attention of the person looking. Does it work? Sometimes you get a small return but it seems like unless you invest millions, you don’t get the return you would want. For example, the Bed,Bath and Beyond postcard that comes in the mail every month where you save 20%,I know and you know that we all have a drawer full of them just in case. This is a company that can afford to remind you that you will save 20% no matter what the expiration date is on that card. So do I advertise, yes –but I try not to do it by sending coupons,I do it to define what my company is all about –to build an image. That’s a whole different topic all together so I will go there another time. It really depends on your product and who is looking for it –I personally wouldn’t look through a discount magazine or newspaper to try and find quality jewelry. It just doesn’t work. But some may look for a free eye exam with purchase or additional services if you clean your air conditioning vents. Targeting advertising is important but is very difficult unless you can really target that market which can be challenging in the jewelry business. What is Marketing? Marketing to me is tricky. It is so broad that it is difficult to account for just about everything in one blog but I will try. Simply stated, marketing is everything you do to place your product or service in the hands of potential customers. How you address your customers, how you handle yourself in public, how your sales team works with customers and the feeling of appreciation and happiness when they walk out the door. My mission statement to my team is,“Every customer should leave happier than when they walked in the door.” This is part of my marketing strategy. Is it realistic? Yes. It definitely is. Sure I get customers that walk in with a chip on their shoulder. My goal is to make sure the chip is long gone before they leave and 99% of the time,it is. Marketing to me is not all process,it is the personality and make up of yourself and your team. In the jewelry business,we get all sorts of personalities that come in here. Some strong, some light. We cater to all and know how to adjust and build relationships with all of our customers. Each customer is offered coffee or a light drink, they are greeted with a good morning/afternoon/evening,my team is all smiles and we try our best so the customer gets the piece they desire at the price they desire. They leave with a Casale bag and friendly goodbyes from the entire team. But you ask… how is that marketing? Marketing to me is all the work done to make people feel comfortable and trusting to work with you. Whether it’s working with customers inside the store, social media marketing or me marketing myself at networking events, charity functions and more. That’s the whole part of me marketing myself and relationship building. I am with the SIEDC,Chamber of Commerce,South Shore Rotary,BNI and attend one off networking meetings to meet others and market myself. It is the whole process of building relationships which I mentioned in my previous blog about networking on Staten Island. I could discuss this for hours at a time but I will cut it off here. Feel free to comment and let me know your thoughts. What is PR? PR,or public relations is a way of getting out into the public eye by getting involved in community activities. It is more personal than business related. Working with charities, helping others in need and doing the little things to create a positive environment for others are all part of PR. Politicians are big with PR because you get to see what the person is really about –or what they say they are really about. To me,actions speak louder than words. I make sure I support at least 1 or more charities each month. It is my choice to help out organizations that are dear to me and that need help such as American Cancer Society (ACS) and Cooley’s Anemia Foundation. I would much rather put my time and money into a charity than pay $3000 a month for a billboard. If you would like to get involved, follow me on Facebook to see what events I am coordinating or helping to raise money for. My recent event was on Dec 15th at my store where we raised over $4000 for Cooley’s Anemia. We had a Holiday Light Show with DJ,break dancers,Zumba,Dominick Mancino,Santa himself and more. Check me out on NY1 news. What is Viral Marketing? My definition of viral marketing is a healthy combination of all 3. I have the opportunity to get creative with ads, market myself as a business and person and build a positive image for myself and my company as I get the opportunity to give back to society. Yeah,I don’t get to hang out with the boys much and I don’t see my wife during the month of December due to Christmas, but being a successful business owner is a lifestyle. You don’t work your 9-5 and hope to be successful. You do whatever you can to get yourself out there by utilizing advertising, marketing and PR strategies. What is my favorite and what do I think has been most rewarding? It’s a tossup between the social aspect of Marketing and PR. Both of which I get to meet and learn from others and network plus I have the opportunity to attend and sponsor charity events. All of which allows me to meet others with the same qualities as I do. Again –the whole relationship thing. Read my other blog if you didn’t already. Conclusion: Have fun,be creative and be positive. Make sure you have a team that supports all of these and you or you will not succeed. Take care of your customers as you would your friends and family cause if you screw over 1 customer, they will be sure to not come back and tell everyone about their experience. And if you’re from Staten Island or a small town,it becomes like a virus and spreads fast. Good luck. Staten Island jewelry store Casale Jewelers brings some holiday cheer and raises money for a great cause.Staten Island,NY (PRWEB) November 29,2010 If you’re feeling jaundiced over the usual gamut of reasons why the holidays are an exercise is crass commercialism and unbridled greed, etc.,imagine instead taking part in Christmas festivities with your friends and family and doing it all for a good cause. Cory Schifter,co-owner of Casale Jewelers, makes that happen with an annual event that supports Cooley’s Anemia Foundation, which supports people who are affected with various forms of thalassemia,a genetic blood disorder. The outcome of this disease is often anemia that lasts throughout a person’s entire lifespan. Although there are different forms of treatment, the most common is red blood cell transfusions, which give the patient a temporary supply of healthy red blood cells. According to information provided by the foundation’s website,“most patients with a major form of thalassemia receive red blood cell transfusions every two to three weeks, amounting to as much as 52 pints of blood a year.” For more than fifty years, the Cooley’s Anemia Foundation has been a strong partner for families living with thalassemia. Although now national in scope,CAF began on a local level,a fact reflected in the continuing importance of its local chapters. After attending the foundation’s annual dinner at the Hilton Garden Inn in Staten Island with his family and co-workers,it became important to Schifter to come part of supporting the cause. “The importance of support for those with the disease and their families were clear,” he said. “The treatment includes hours and hours of blood transfusions, which is maintenance therapy, but not curative. My sister-in-law carries the trait and I recently found out that my niece has it as well, further making me eager to help.” In the past, the original Casale Jewelers had a holiday event for the neighborhood at his house every year. Schifter decided to bring his event to Dongan Hills in an attempt to do his part in creating support for awareness of Cooley’s Anemia. The store was covered in Christmas lights and decorations, including an oversized snow globe, and Santa’s playhouse, which created a pretty nice picture for passerby. The hour-and-a-half long event boasted live music,Mr. and Mrs. Claus, dancers and even a bike-riding elf! In addition to live entertainment Casale’s offered 50/50 raffles and a “Raffle for Rock,in which one lucky visitor won an Engagement Ring. Local businesses donated ten other prizes to give away to raffle winners as well. The event was a huge success and raised over $6000,all of which was donated to the Cooley’s Anemia Foundation in support of finding a cure. The public reaction to this event was extremely positive and a number of local businesses were involved in contributing in their own ways, whether by donating prizes for the raffles or just giving their time and talent to help decorate the store, provide music, and much more. Businesses include Xtreme Houselifts and PH Pressure Washing for help with the lighting of the store,NYC Arts Cypher,DJ Mega Mix and Zumba by Angela. In light of its huge success,Cory has made a commitment to hold this even every year in honor of this foundation. “I believe in supporting charities such as this one in order to relieve some of the suffering that children are faced with. It is a difficult world and we are all faced with challenges;it is our responsibility as members of a community to support each other.” The store is lit and the big event raffle and entertainment will be held on Wednesday December 15th at 7 p.m. Click here to view the Facebook event page and be kept up to date on special guests, rainout date if necessary and more. Article documented in the November/December edition of Industry Magazine Staten Island. Why do diamonds appraise for higher than what you pay? You have to be careful as jewelers may beef up the price to make you feel like you got a deal. Diamonds are appraised based on a Rapaport (Rap) sheet. It is a grid that contains prices based on size, shape, color and clarity (Each of the 4c’s). For ex. a 1ct (carat) Round,G color,VS2 clarity appraises for $7300 a ct. When you buy a diamond, ask where the list price and the appraisal price come from. Should be from Rap. If it is not and they start to talk around it that it is a better stone, and it is not accurate they are totally wrong. The entire industry bases diamond price on the Rap sheet and you should too. When a customer comes in to make a diamond purchase,we educate them about the 4c’s,how we price our stones and get information from them as to what size and shape stone she desires. 99% of the guys know right off the bat what she wants and most have a photo in their phone. The next step is to find their price range. This is important as sometimes, the price may affect either the size or the quality they desire. We will work with our customers to get that happy medium because size does not matter in this case. If quality is poor, the light will not shine through the diamond as it should and will look dull. There is so much to write and I can keep going all day with this. If you have questions, feel free to call me at (718) 351-8300 or email me at cory@casalejewelry.com. The point of networking on Staten Island is to meet new people and build relationships. This is the key to building and growing your business. Everyone wants to be able to say,“I know someone…”or “I recommend this person for….”. This all happens in good time. When you first date a person, you don’t drop to one knee and ask for their hand in marriage. You go on dates, get to know each other and build a relationship of trust and confidence that you can recommend this person. I don’t recommend everyone, some people I just don’t click with but there are many others that I will recommend. When you recommend business, you should trust that they are going to get the best treatment and be well taken care of. If not,you can burn a bridge with your customer and possibly lose them yourself. Another important note, and it’s weird to think…Staten Island is like a small mid-west town. Everybody knows everybody. Someone’s cousin is related to my brothers Uncle or you went to school with this one who knows my brother. It’s crazy. I meet so many people and we always wind up saying the same thing…what a small world. The more people you meet, the more people you will realize you already have a relationship in some way. How long is it going to take? It may take weeks or maybe a few years, trust is earned and as long as you can show that you can be trusted, business will come your way. At my first mixer,I introduced myself and started my sales pitch. Casale Jewelers has the best jewelry,we design customized jewelry and we only have the best. It is all true of course,LOL,but it didn’t work. I was a walking billboard and business card flipper rather than someone that can be spoken to and feel comfortable around. I started reading and educating myself about networking and that’s when I realized that I had no idea what I was doing. Networking = relationships. Read up on it. Jeffrey Gitomers book,“Little Black Book of Connections”is a great read. What networking groups are are available on Staten Island? There are business specific groups like BNI and Chamber Business Guilds to name a few. Each business classification is exclusive so you can’t have 2 jewelers or plumbers, only 1. Than you have larger business organizations such as the SIEDC and the Chamber of Commerce. Both try to better Staten Island by getting involved with the community and having special events that businesses are part of and support. And finally, they have charity specific organiztions such as the Rotary (I am part of South Shore) that signfiy service before self. Rotary in International and do a large amount of work for the community. Either way, each of these groups allow you to network and show the type of person you are. You market yourself by getting involved and others like to deal with people they know. _____________________________________ For More Information, feel free to contact: Cory N.
